Comacina Island

Among the most interesting archaeological sites in northern Italy in the early middle ages. Starting from the Antiquarium Museum, near which you can visit the Romanesque church of St. Mary Magdalene with it’s famous Gothic tower, you embark on the waters of the lake to reach the Comacina Island. The only one on Lake Como, was the protagonist of the local history in Roman and Medieval times. The magnitude of the island in history is such to make us believe that it was the mythical place from which starts the whole process of development of Italian medieval art. The wonderful story of Comacina seems to have stopped abruptly in 1169, which marked the ‘annus horribilis’ it’s tragic fate, devastated and razed to the ground by Como and Barbarossa, the island declined rapidly, finishing during the following centuries in a state of neglect. Every year, towards the end of June, a wonderful musical and pyrotechnic show recalls the invasion of the island and its destruction. Not to be missed!

From Perledo the best way to go to Isola Comacina is going to Varanna pier and take a boat. Use public service. If you stop in Lenno than the Villa can be reached on foot or by taxi boat from Lido di Lenno.
In just 5 minutes you will arrive in Pigra, starting from the lake in Argenio. You will overcome a difference in altitude of over 600 m with an average gradient of 70%. Once in Pigra, a pretty village, a wonderful view!

The English styled gardens, enriched with sculptures of Villa Melzi strech out along the lake. Inland, the Chapel and the orangery, today transformed into a historical museum, are splendid expression of neo-classical style and as such stated national monument. This architectural complex was realized between 1808 and 1810.

From Perledo you can get the museum taking a bus line D21 (Bar Milano Stop) till Esino Lario or if you prefer walk download the .gpx track on our page “trekking near by you” (n°04. Esino Lario Inferiore)
Wetland area suitable for stopping and nesting migratory birds. Places characterized by the presence of habitats and species both animal and vegetable, of great interest. It is possible to visit the reserve, following some itineraries on foot, by bike, on horseback or going up the lagoon with a canoe.

The closest access point if you don’t have a car is Colico.
Lecco Mountaineering Observatory

Corenno Plinio

Medieval village built on a Roman settlement and overlooking the lake. The peculiarity of this village are the steps all carved into the rock, so much so that today Corenno is also nicknamed the Village of a thousand steps. A medieval castle, with its walls and two crenellated towers and the church of San Tommaso di Canterbury rich in Gothic sculptures, beautiful arches and ancient frescoes. The view over the lake is enchanting and there are numerous historical re-enactments not to be missed.
How arrive
By train from Varenna Railway station. Dervio or Dorio Stop and than walk for 25 min. In alternative you can get there starting directly from Casa Valeria walking on the beautiful path “Sentiero del Viandante” (about 2,5 hours)
