Varenna Old Town

Walking without haste, among the “contrade” (typical narrow streets) of the historic center, fills the heart with joy and eyes of beauty. You can leave your car in the multi-floor car park, in Via Polvanio or nearby and start the visit from the upper part, or from Piazza San Giorgio. Otherwise, you could leave the car at the train station or at the ferry port and start the visit, following the romantic path “passerella degli innamorati”. Varenna is a small village that still transmits ancient sensations and gives glimpses of unforgettable landscapes. Take a bit of time, enjoying the magic of the place, drinking a good coffee, is a pleasure that you can give yourself, sitting in one of the club in front of the lake, nearby the pier.

Vezio and it’s Castle

Open from the first Saturday of March until the 1st of November. Closed in case of bad weather.

Vezio is a small ancient jewel. You visit it in a few tens of minutes, but it will leave an indelible memory in your heart. Absolutely to visit his castle too! It is possible entering, attend a falconry show or sip a drink surrounded by nature of its park. The privileged position makes it one of the places with a better view of the lake.

Villa Cipressi

Beautiful group of buildings and gardens, built between 1400s and 1800s, harmoniously renovated, keeping the original architectural lines. Owned by the municipality of Varenna, it performs numerous functions: hotel/restaurant, convention center, venue for weddings (many celebrated every year by couples from all over the world) and museum-garden. The gardens, open to the public, are a masterpiece of architecture, characterized by stairways and terraces sloping down to the lake.

Ancient female monastery of the 12th century. Donated to the Italian state by the De Marchi family in 1939. In 1953, the congress center was built, which still today holds conferences of a cultural and scientific nature, including the summer courses of the prestigious Italian School of Physics. In 2003 he opened the Casa Museo, consisting of 14 rooms, in which original decorations and furniture can be admired. Enchanting the Botanical Garden, rich in rare and exotic plant species, maintained luxuriant by the mild climate typical of the lake. A path of about two kilometers, along the shore of the lake, immersed in wonderful scents and colors. Numerous and beautiful architectural decorations on site: statues, small temples, reliefs and fountains.

Orrido di Bellano

A natural gorge, created by the Pioverna river whose waters, over the centuries, have shaped gigantic potholes and caverns. The dark ravines and the rumble of the tumultuous waters are suggestive. The “Cà del diavol” (house of the devil), evokes fears and satanic rituals, increasing the mysterious charm of the place. A walkway allows you to admire the scenic beauty of the place up close.
